Yared

Yared, the supposed founder of the Ethiopian ecclesiastical chant, can often be seen in paintings depicted as a dabtara equipped with his crutch and sistrum, standing chanting before King Gabra Masqal, son of King Kaleb. The king leans forward, fascinated, as the chant develops, and the royal spear accidentally pierces the foot of the singer unobserved by either king or saint.
